Getting Around in Japan

In Japan we do not own a car. We are using several modes of transportation here in Nagoya and we are actually really enjoying not owning a car. There are plenty of ways to get around in our city and we don't miss the car repairs, gas, and insurance that we would have to pay if we had one. In Japan gas is nearly SIX DOLLARS a gallon!! So crazy. Therefore we chose not to go there;)

So how do we get around Nagoya? Well, for starters we walk. There are plenty of places within walking distance that we go to. The grocery store, drug store, and many restaurants are all within walking distance from our home. If it is a little to far to walk we use our bicycles. This is actually the way we choose most often. It is so relaxing to ride a bike and it is the cheapest way to have some wheels. When it's too far to ride a bike we can take the Linimo (magnet train) or the subway to get to several places such as Nagoya Dome (Home of the Dragons- a baseball team) or the mall, or to downtown Nagoya.

I thought it was going to be really hard not having a car to jump into and go but it actually slows down life and lets us relax a little. We get more time outdoors and Noah enjoys it more as well. Here are some pictures of us with our new bicycles!!

  1. That looks like a lot of fun.
I've always wanted to live in a city where I wouldn't have to use a car.
Keep up the great work guys!

  2. Love the bikes! I would love to ride a bike around here, but drivers would run over you in a heartbeat, and they are not "courteous". Be careful on the bikes, I know you are, it is just a "mom" thing to say that. How do the Japanese parents with kids ride them on their bikes. Things sound so nice over there for you guys. I hope they stay that way. Can't wait to see you some day. Love Mom
